Writing a Friendly Letter: Tips and Examples

How to Write a Friend a Letter of Friendship Salutation

It’s best to begin a letter with pleasantries. This lets the recipient know that the letter will be friendly and lighthearted.

A good way to do this is by sharing a funny joke or story. You can also share something about yourself, such as a recent trip you took or a significant life event that happened to you.

If you’re writing to a close friend, start your letter with a brief acknowledgment. This is a way to let your friend know that you are thinking about them and want to share something with them. One or two sentences is usually enough.

The word acknowledgement means to recognize the existence or truth of something. It can also be used to express gratitude for someone’s help. For example, an author might include an acknowledgements section at the end of their book, thanking all the people who helped them make it happen.

Another common use of the word is to admit that you did something wrong. For example, if you have an argument with someone, you might say “I acknowledge that I acted inappropriately.”

When writing a letter, it’s best to keep the acknowledgment short and positive. It should match your tone and leave your friend feeling good about the relationship. You might even use words like take it easy or kind thoughts.

When writing a friendly letter to your friend, begin with a greeting. Using words like “Dear [Name],” “Sincerely,” and “Best regards” puts the recipient first and sets the tone of the letter. Avoid phrases such as “To whom it may concern,” which carry a more professional and impersonal tone. Next, include the sender’s address and the date. After skipping a line, write the body of the letter. This could be something as simple as a recent joke you played on your friend or an update on any recent activities or accomplishments you have shared. It could also be a compliment or a special note.

In the body of your letter, write about something fun that you and your friend did recently. You can also tell them a joke that they’ve played on you or something else interesting about yourself. It’s also a good idea to include a personal catchphrase that they use and/or something that only you two know.

The friendly letter heading includes the sender’s address and the date. The salutation usually begins with ‘Dear (name)’. It’s not necessary to add the person’s surname and it’s better to skip a line before writing the greeting. You can also refer to them as ‘Hanim’ or ‘Bey’ instead.

It’s not required to include a title after the name, but it can be helpful. You can end the letter by wishing them all the best or telling them that you miss them, depending on what kind of relationship you have with your friend. You can also sign off with ‘Yours truly’ or ‘Affectionately yours’.

Close your letter with a complimentary closing that reflects the tone of your relationship with the recipient. Some of the most common include love, fondly, best wishes, affectionately, and take care. For letters to close friends, these types of words add a personal touch and are a good alternative to a formal closing like respectfully.

This closing can be used to show that you’re interested in the recipient’s future plans, a recent funny event you shared together, or anything else that shows your interest in the person and your desire to stay in contact. It works for both well-known acquaintances and people who are not on your regular contact list. Adding your name beneath this closing makes it more personal and ensures that the reader knows who wrote the letter. This is important if you’re using snail mail or sending your letter as an attachment to an email message.
